10 Years – from Project 2Rs to 3R

Looking back at the past 10 years, this Project has undergone a metamorphosis from 2Rs to 3R (Note 1).
As a pioneer project of wholistic care for children and youth in residential homes, the Committee Board Members and Superintendents of three agencies including Evangel Children’s Home, Precious Blood Children’s Village and Sisters of the Good Shepherd formulated proposals and procedures, looked for cooperation partners and funders to help support this project. Their vision to extend such all-rounded care to the 4,000 admitted residential children in Hong Kong still exist.

1. 2014 contract signing
In 2014, 2Rs (phase 1) and our cooperation partner - Evangel Hospital signed the 1st contract. Representatives from the Chan Dang Social Service Foundation (one of sponsoring organizations), and Board Members of three agencies attended to celebrate.

2024 marked the 10th anniversary of this Project. From 2Rs to 3R, we whole-heartedly thank all our funders (Note 2), the medical team of our cooperation partner (Note 3), caseworkers and caretakers for their love and concern to the children. We hope our services have given new insight to our cases especially on the value of priceless health.
Throughout these 10 years, there was not much change to the referral procedures and service scope. However, we tried reaching out to the public by means of industry-wide sharing sessions, exhibitions, casebook publishing, media promotion (e.g. newspaper, radio broadcast) and university research publication (Note 4), striving with hope for long term support from the Government and The Community Care Fund.

3. Publications
The casebook (reprinted in 2022) and university research published in 2020.
4. Seminar
Taken at 2020 year end, an industry-wide sharing session was held with over 100 participants, including representatives from the Social Welfare Department, sponsoring organizations (Note 2), cooperation partners, honorable guests, university representatives, and management of the residential homes.

Right after the difficult times of 2019 to 2023 when hope seemed frail, good news came one after another—2Rs casebook “Children Who Survived the Storm” won two major awards (listed below). This encouraging news confirmed that our efforts were not in vain, the public still cared about the residential children and youth. It thus motivated us to strive forward continuously.

The new chapter starting 2021 also brought a new name: 2Rs was upgraded to 3R, further solidifying the close relationship with our cooperation partner through ups and downs! March 2026 marked the end of Project 3R. Agency management reassured that “our historical mission is complete!” We then focused on arranging necessary referrals and prescriptions, officially bidding farewell. We wish the children and youth in the residential homes continued access to timely and appropriate assessments and treatment, and unfolding fulfilling lives!

ECH 70th Anniversary|Connecting Family Love Across Eras|Short Videos

In 2026, Evangel Children’s Home celebrates its 70th anniversary. To mark this occasion, we have connected with alumni (former residents) from all over the world to launch a series of celebratory events under the theme “70th Anniversary Celebration — “Love • Fulfillment • Wholeness” This groundbreaking initiative united the love of alumni residents, children, staff, and colleagues from different eras, creating wonderful collective memories.

Homecoming Fun Day

Hundreds of alumni (former residents) and former staff returned home for a joyful reunion, bringing together “family” from different generations. Former residents and their relatives visited their “homes in the old days”, that were filled with childhood memories. Many of them made special trips from overseas to Hong Kong to reminisce, creating a touching scene.

Platinum Jubilee – Alumni Homecoming Gala Dinner

Alumni, guests, current residents, and staff gathered to celebrate, embodying the “inheritance of love”, “family love” and “gratitude.” Love ambassador Ms. Jade Kwan and guest speaker Mr. Kimman Wong’s sharing and inspiration through hymns and testimony was encouraging. The officiating guests kicked off the launch ceremony of 70 Life Stories. Alumni from overseas shared their heartfelt gratitude for the love and support they received from the Evangel Children’s Home.

《Set Sights on the Ideal Realm》-  Natalie

Natalie (alias) had to receive foster care services since birth as her mother was unsuitable to take care of her. The foster family lived peacefully until she entered the turbulent adolescence. Such dramatic changes finally resulted in the arrangement of her placement in a children’s residential home.

Emotional Roller Coaster

Natalie described herself as quite emotional. Before evaluation, her moods easily swing uncontrollably between extreme highs and lows. At times, she would yell at people and slam the doors. At other times, she would hide away and cry. She has no real friends in the children’s home or at school. Her relationships with others are fragile. Fortunately, she is naturally active and has won many awards both inside and outside of school, including basketball, soccer, and track and field. She also has a special talent for music, like playing the piano, acoustic guitar and drums. She is truly gifted.

More About ECH Sponsorship Program

Traces of Love – First-generation alumnus, Ms. Polly Wong

Back in the 1970s, a caring ‘big sister’ joined the Evangel Children’s Home (ECH), carrying with her the spirit of family love to nurture the younger ones. On the occasion of ECH’s 70th anniversary, she returned ECH with her newly ordained daughter to visit her ‘younger brothers and sisters.’ Through their artistic creations, they also lend a helping hand to raise funds for the home’s improvement projects, continuing the legacy of love and care.

Polly entered Evangel Children’s Home at the age of one. Then she left the home at 16 and lived with her remarried mother and step-sisters. But she never felt at ease in that unfamiliar household, so she worked hard to earn her own living, determined to fight for her future through her own efforts. Later, she married and moved to the UK, beginning a new chapter in her life.  Grateful for the care she received in her childhood at the Home, she now teaches Chinese painting to fellow Chinese who have settled in the UK. In her leisure time, she paints landscapes and dedicates the income from her artwork to give back to her beloved Home (ECH) – expressing her remembrance and support for the next generations with every stroke of her brush. She deeply understands that young people without family’s support often feel lost when facing life’s challenges. Therefore, she frequently donates to support the “2nd Chance in Life–Transitional Youth Sponsorship” Program at ECH.

May Love Be Passed On

On 15th November, 2025, the day of the global alumni reunion event, Polly returned home to celebrate ECH’s 70th anniversary. In an interview, she expressed gratitude to Miss Ruth Sundquist (ECH founder), for raising her, and to the supporters who donated and nurtured her at the ECH, where some children even had the opportunity to study abroad. Thinking back to her childhood, she remembered the joy of visitors coming and treating them with ice cream, it’s moments of pure happiness. With all her heart, she hopes that this generation of children will experience the same love and grow up with wonderful memories.

At the Global Alumni Homecoming Reunion Dinner, the first-generation of alumni (including Polly) came together to sponsor the ‘1-to-1 Program’.  Each alumnus invited a current resident child to share the evening, symbolizing the passing on of family love. They hope the children will have happy memories and learn to be grateful as they grow up, so that love can be passed on

Polly’s s daughter, Sissie Wong, has walked with the Lord for 25 years. From her young age, she felt the heavenly calling to dedicate her life to service—beginning in pastoral ministry, then missionary work. In time, God led her back to the UK, where she faithfully served in the church for more than a decade. In September 2025, she was ordained, officially becoming a pastor. Sissie is deeply convinced that her journey of faith has been upheld by the prayers of her mother and Auntie Ruth (Miss Ruth Sundquist—whom she lovingly calls a ‘Woman of God’), whose faithful intercession over the years has covered her and the next generation of ECH alumni.

On the day of the event, she returned with her mother to visit ECH, the place she calls God’s blessed family and home. Seeing the children there today filled her heart with gratitude. Her prayer is that God’s love will continue to be passed down through ECH, from generation to generation.

Evangel Children’s Home – a place that nurtured her growth and blesses future generations. May the children and youth of ECH grow up well and live out a brighter life.
