Evangel Children’s Home’s Day Care Service will conclude in June 2027, as the organization is to focus on serving more residential home care children and youth, addressing the diverse needs and development of them.
Day Care Service Completes Its Mission
In addition to its residential services, Evangel Children’s Home established the Day Care Service in 2003 to care for children aged 6-12 from low-income and disadvantaged families who lacked adequate daytime care. The Home pioneered the “Extended ASCP Services” in the sector, providing early support to children from families in need. With the growing demand for services for children with Special Educational Needs (SEN), a dedicated service center was established to offer them one-stop care, training, and family support. As the Social Welfare Department fully launched the “After-School Care Programme for Primary School Students” in 2023, societal needs have changed, and the Day Care Service of Evangel Children’s Home will honorably conclude its mission in June 2027.
Gratitude for the Support in Caring for SEN Children
Thanks to the generous support and donations from hundreds of corporations, foundations, organizations, and individual donors over the past 20 years, the Day Care Service has successfully implemented 8 phases of its program, each lasting about 3 years, serving approximately 360 children and over 300 families.
We are grateful for the support following the pilot program from 2003-2007. The Community Chest of Hong Kong and the Zonta Club of the New Territories funded the operating expenses for 2007-2010 and 2010-2011, respectively. From 2011 to 2027, the Social Welfare Department’s Partnership Fund for the Disadvantaged, along with benevolent corporate partners, supported a total of 5 program phases through matching grants.
From its early “U-Turn” and “Select” programs to the “S.E.N. –Shine. Empower. Network – Integrated Service ” project, through its 1.0, 2.0, and now its 3.0 program which expires next February, the program has always adhered to its original service mission: to provide comprehensive support to children with special learning needs and their families, with a focus on the family, the child, and the community. Recent comprehensive services include homework tutoring, various interest and growth groups, professional training (such as speech therapy, sensory integration training, and related professional training), counseling services, play therapy, parenting counseling, and parent workshops. The service has also expanded to include on-site training program at schools.
Carry on the Past Open up the Future
Looking back with gratitude on over two decades of service, we appreciate the widespread support, especially during challenging fundraising periods, which enabled the children to grow and transform. The children and families still receiving assistance will be referred to and matched with suitable services.
Looking ahead, as the proportion of residential children with SEN increases, our organization will continue to use the funds raised to support these school-aged children and their families, and to expand our services in response to the needs of vulnerable children in society.
